Really… Almost… The image above perfectly illustrates how I have felt during the past five months… The bridge exists, but no one can use it. Parts are there, it’s technically a bridge, but pieces seem to always be missing…

Here is where my bridge is at…

There was a single typo on the cover that needs to be addressed by my publisher’s graphics department and then it is finished. There is still a step or two left. Basically, publishing has changed drastically since 2005 if you are a no-name author like myself (read more on that here if you’re curious). Thanks to Amazon, on-demand publishing was born.

On-Demand Publishing aka “Why it’s an almost”

This week I should be able to finally sign off on everything. The cover, the manuscript, the price (more on that in a minute)… all of it. What I am signing off for is giving my publisher permission to send the digital proofs of my book to all of their distributors (Here is all of them). These distributors are basically the stores you will be able to buy books from. They take the digital proofs I am approving and they print them. The digital proofs are just that, the digital version of my book. These digital proofs are also what you will be able to read on your Kindle or tablet. So, as I understand it (still learning), if you order my book on Amazon Prime, they print it and ship it to you immediately… two-day shipping and everything.

Again… this is what I have been told, I guess we will all find out for ourselves soon enough.

This is why it’s always an almost. First I had to fight for the cover which is more than a little controversial (check out the story behind it here), then I found out I had to pay to edit my own book which set me back a couple months. Now we are simply waiting for a few tweaks and this thing might actually happen.

Now the price

I’m kinda mad about this. Again, I was led to believe I had more control, but alas I am at a loss once more. Here is the breakdown of the editions and their prices.

  • eBook: $3.99 – available wherever you buy eBooks
  • Soft Cover: $12.95 – available wherever you buy books online. I will be actively pursuing to have brick and mortar stores carry my book, but I will have to do all the work of getting them to order it. We will see how that goes.
  • Hard Cover: $29.95 – This one especially frustrates me…

The soft and hardcover prices are the lowest they would let me go. I feel that the more affordable the book, the more likely someone will be to buy it. I was also informed I will never be able to lower the price… ever…

So I think I’m gonna stick it to the man…

But… I’m the man…

I plan on doing whatever I can to figure out how to get the soft and hardcover editions at a cheaper price for everyone. I have a couple ideas but I’m not ready to share them as I am unsure of whether I can pull them off or not. The moment I figure out a way to do this you all will be the first to know.
